CLAS, Culture, & Recovery: Using Process Improvement to Enhance the Cultural Responsiveness of Substance Use Care - Part Two

Increasingly, federal and state donor agencies are requiring that their grant recipients meet and uphold CLAS (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services) standards in clinical work environments. In support of this overarching goal and meaningful organizational change, the Northwest ATTC is inviting Alaskan agencies to participate in a targeted training and technical assistance opportunity.

Description of Training and Coaching:

This technical support to agency staff will begin with a two-part virtual training workshop:

Part 1: Wednesday, March 20th, 2024, 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM AKST; and

Part 2: Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024, 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM AKST.

We will focus on a condensed introduction to CLAS that incorporates cultural responsiveness and how to make use of a range of process improvement tools. Agency staff and leaders will focus on identifying 1 to 2 changes related to their SUD service delivery or agency culture that they can implement over the course of the period from April through May. During this time, your efforts will be supported by short 30-60 minute meetings with the facilitator/coach, which then will be revisited in September at a follow-up meeting. Leaders of agencies may elect to conduct a walk-through or make use of a different process improvement with their staff, depending on the CLAS standard they are seeking to address. In this collaborative work, we will co-create the change process while applying a lens of cultural humility.

Learning Goals:

Focus will be on gaining familiarity with CLAS standards and how to make use of CLAS in combination with organizational process improvement (NIATx) tools to support and implement culturally responsive care and treatment when working with people who have substance use challenges.

Facilitated sessions will help you to:

• Increase familiarity with and review CLAS and core organizational change process tools (NIATx).

• Explore planning and implementation tools that can be adopted to meet your agency/institutional goals.

• Identify 1-2 changes you can implement using planning and organizational process tools related to CLAS that will make a positive difference for clients receiving SUD services.

“Implementing the National CLAS Standards can help your organization meet accreditation requirements and align with performance metrics in your field.”
